GAZELLE survived a late charge from Bears to win 4-2 in their first game of the Port Moresby women’s A grade competition on Saturday.

Both teams were rusty in the fielding department but Gazelle had enough composure with the bat to get the points.

The Bears will need to get fit and focused for this weekend after a poor effort in the in-field that saw the antelopes steal bases.

Gazelle’s Jessica Tonga picked up a point after the first two batters Jenny Pilak and Talitha Pondriket struck out.

Bears did not pick any runs until in the second inning, they managed through Quandalyne Vinim and Antonia Kinit while Gazelle did not score any runs.

Bears had the opportunity in the third inning but did not score any runs before Pondriket, Tonga and Mila Totil came home to extend the scoreline to 4-2.

Gazelle were unlucky in their second match when they lost to competition leaders United Sisters 9-6.

The Gazelle’s win and a lose puts them on sixth spot.

The Sisters lead on 19 points  while Stingers and Wantoks follow on 17 points.

Results: Chebu 24 Mariners 1, Stringers 20 Bears 7, Yokomo 9 Chebu 8, Wantoks 11 Mariners 10.
