REGISTRAR of Political Parties Dr Alphonse Gelu says the new government has got off to a promising start,
showing signs of responsible leadership and maturity.
Gelu was pleased with the manner in which parliamentarians elected their leaders, particularly the speaker and prime minister. He said the MPs remained true to the spirit of the Organic Law on Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates (OLIPPAC) by ensuring they voted with their parties rather than against or abstaining.
“What transpired on the floor of parliament was a sign of political maturity by the elected leaders,” Gelu said.
“I urge our leaders to maintain that standard in conducting their business as elected leaders of this country in
the next five years.”Regarding the performance of the political parties in the election, Gelu said he was happy with the overall performances, especially the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the Triumph Heritage Empowerment (T.H.E) parties. He said T.H.E Party, despite being new, did well in terms of winning more seats than many other established parties.
The People’s Progress Party (PPP), PNG Party and the National
Alliance also did well. He wanted to see improvement from them.
He said the leaders of parties that did not perform well in the
election “cannot continue to lead”. “He or she must pass the leadership baton to another member of the party,” he said.Gelu believed the practice would contribute to the continuance of the parties concerned in the politics of the country under new and fresh leadership.
“This way would ensure that young and vibrant leaders would emerge to contribute to the positive growth of the party and the country as a whole,” he said.
