PAPUA New Guinean born rugby star and Australian Wallabies half back Will Genia has encouraged PNG children to believe in their own abilities.
Genia said during the official launch of the Fresh Water brand bottled water at the Port Moresby International School last Friday.
“Sport of any kind teaches commitment, it teaches teamwork and it teaches children to believe in their own abilities,” Genia said.
Genia and former Kumul captain John Wilshere launched the drinking water brand and also introduced the Grassroots Footy Foundation.
The footy foundation is an initiative of Fresh Water, Genia and Wilshere.
He said the grassroots footy foundation aimed to develop basic football skills for both rugby league and rugby union in young Papua New Guineans.
“The foundation hopes to encourage healthy lifestyles and help young grassroots footy enthusiasts around PNG to develop their skills in a series of clinics that will run over a period of time in the country.” Genia said the foundation aimed to see young Papua New Guineans succeed in sport and life playing at the top professional level nationally and abroad.
“Fostering a grassroots youth development structure and programme in PNG teaches our children the basics in their villages, in their schools and in their local community.
“We hope that through the foundation we can harness their natural attributes from an early age and give them strong basic skills that will add to their ability to flourish as their love of sports develops over the years.
“We also hope that through the foundation we can teach young Papua New Guineans to believe in themselves, in their abilities and to live healthy lifestyles,” he said.
Genia and Wilshere were also involved in a footy clinic after the launching with some school children at the Port Moresby International School ov
