THE Gerehu Offseason Rugby League has suspended its finals indefinitely in response to the global coronavirus pandemic, according to president Frank Kurum.
He told The National yesterday that the league was scheduled to continue its finals last weekend but due to the pandemic, the competition had to be deferred like others nationwide. “Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, health authorities have warned against the gathering of large crowds,” Kurum said.
“And since our league attracts large crowds on weekends, we’ve decided to suspend the competition indefinitely.
“The health and safety of the players, officials and supporters are paramount.
“It’s an issue that is beyond our control but we have to take preventive measures amid the pandemic.
“The spread of the coronavirus was something we considered when deciding on an indefinite suspension.
“We can’t play on and risk the safety of everyone involved in the competition. We, like all other competitions nationwide, need to comply with the advice of the relevant authorities.”
Kurum said Debonah Hornets, Zero Unit Blackouts and 8-Mile Mountain Eagles had already secured their spots in the semifinals.
“At the resumption of the competition, the Bulldogs and 24 Thunders will play their knockout match and the winners will join those three teams in the semifinals,” he said.
Kurum urged the teams to remain fit and healthy as the competition would resume once the league was given the green light by the authorities.
