Getting it right is the key

Letters

AS a public servant for almost 33 years I wish to express my views on the following:

  • The roads linking the provinces, districts and villages must be up to international standard;
  • We need a reliable communications system that is accessible by everyone and at an affordable rate;
  • The electricity supply must be reliable and accessible to everyone, including the investors, and we should do something to stop power blackouts;
  • The water supply must be reliable and available to everyone in the country, including investors;
  • Our tax system should encourage investment;
  • Tribal and ethnic fighting, petty crimes in cities and towns and the overall law and order situation should be brought under control or minimised; and
  • We should fight the growing giant that is corruption at all levels. Corruption is threatening and destroying our governance process from the legislative level down to the grassroots.

The above are some of the risk factors that investors assess prior to making business investment decisions and if the government is serious about attracting investors it should look into these issues.
The free education policy should be strategically developed and we should know the number of school leavers coming out of high schools, colleges and universities every year and create a balance to ensure that at least 75 per cent or so join the workforce to utilise the knowledge meaningfully rather than be left frustrated because of scarce job opportunities.
These youths are in their teens and when they are not meaningfully engaged in worthwhile activities can turn to drugs, alcoholism and partly contribute to other social and law and order problems.
