GOVERNOR-General Sir Michael Ogio has been suspended from office by parliament in a new twist of political events yesterday.
The suspension paved way for Speaker Jeffery Nape yesterday afternoon to automatically assume the position of acting governor-general.
He then presided over the swearing-in of Peter O’Neill who was re-elected prime minister on Monday by 69 MPs.
After that, Nape signed instruments dismissing ministers in the Somare government who had been sworn in only hours earlier in the morning by Sir Michael Ogio at Government House.
In other developments, in the morning, as the political impasse continued:
qThe governor-general told the nation to recognise Sir Michael Somare as prime minister;
qThe Grand Chief said despite the events of the past couple of days, he was confident that common sense would prevail; and
qWorld leaders, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd expressed deep concern.
