A CATHOLIC priest from Ghana has arrived to take up the position of parish priest at the Yobai Catholic Mission in Simbu.

Father Joseph Sakitei was welcomed by church members in the remote Yobai parish in South Simbu.

The 6000-member parish has been without a priest for the past 23 years.

The Yobai parishioners welcomed him at Kuri-Gaba village near the Catholic mission station with singing and dancing.

Kundiawa Catholic Diocese Bishop Anton Bal appointed Sakitei.

Sakitei is determined to teach the people life skills on using food such as cassava, ginger, kaukau and livestock products to sustain their lives.

He has started teaching and training people in the northern part of Simbu.

Sakitei has been given six hectares of land on which he will grow food.

He will train people on how to make items like peanut butter, kaukau and cassava flour.

“The people of Yobai parish have already made me become a landowner by giving me six hectares of land and I am very happy,” Sakitei said.
