Giants resist Swans’ courage

A field goal in extra time by 9-mile Giants five eight Victor Peter clinched the Suburban Rugby Football League A Grade crown 7-6 over favourites Morata Swans at the Kone Tigers oval on Sunday.
The scores were dead locked at 6-6 at regulation time and extra time. Giants scooped the Suburban Cup and pursed K4500 cash for their remarkable efforts while Swans settled for K2000.
Both sides played aggressive football in both attacking and defence but the game was riddled with poor options and dropped balls.
Giants were first to score when second row Tigi Andape crashed wide out in the 16th minute in the opening half with the conversion attempt unsuccessful.
An infringement by Swans prop Clement Ambo notched the penalty goal to extend their lead 6-0.
The second stanza resumed aggressively but again it was poor execution by both sides which denied them scoring opportunities.
In the 31st minute, mark Swans were rewarded a try and trailed 6-4.
Swan’s five eight Gideon equalised through a penalty goal.
Giants skipper Raymond Wesley said it was not an easy win whichthey had to struggle against one of the best side in Suburban league.
Wesley said; “After five years of hunting, now we succeeded to capture the top honours. We assure the Swans and other affiliates that the premiership would be really guarded in 2013.”
Swans Gideon accepted the narrow loss and congratulated the Giants for playing a good, solid football.
