NOVEMBER 29, 2013, is a date 13-year-old Chelsea Yimaye will never forget.
The young lass from West Sepik and Morobe surprised herself and especially her mother, Ursula when she walked out the gates of Gordon International School with five academic prizes during the schools 11th Grade 8 graduation.
Part of the prizes included Brian Bell shopping vouchers.
Yimaye will start Grade 9 at the Port Moresby International School come the start of the academic year.
With her father working away from Port Moresby and mother who quite regularly was out on duty travels, Yimaye worked hard to balance school work and taking care of her three younger siblings.
Ursula said, when she was out on duty travels, her daughter was up as early as 4.30am to prepare breakfast and lunch for her two siblings and set off to school when Joe (the driver) parked at the gate for their pick up.
Yamiye took the opportunity to acknowledge all her teachers who have contributed immensely towards her learning and especially the school principal, Raphael Sapea and his office staff for liaising with the Brian Bell for the prizes.
“Thank you Brian Bell for the Shopping Vouchers! You have certainly made it easy for me with my back-to-school shopping,” she said.
Graduation guest speaker and former national planning department secretary, Valentine Kambori spoke of the importance of the five Ps – Purpose, Perseverance, Persistence, Perspire and being Pro-active.
Kambori told the students to “determine their future and not predict it”.
