Girls’ school opens renovated dorm

MADINA Girls High School in New Ireland can now access the refurbished dormitory following the opening last Tuesday.
Governor Sir Julius Chan, who opened the dormitory, made the commitment to upgrade the dorms when he visited Madina in 2009 and acknowledged Poliamba Ltd for fulfilling this promise two days prior to the country celebrating its 37th Independence Anniversary.
The 64-bed dormitory is also a fitting Independence gift for the school.
Poliamba Ltd, a subsidiary of the New Britain Palm Oil Ltd (NBPOL), made an initial commitment of K150,000 under the Tax Credit Scheme and the finished building totalling K200,000.
Poliamba Ltd general manager Gareth Disley commended Sir Julius for initiating the Tax Credit scheme, giving the company the opportunity and responsibility to give back to New Ireland.
“This is only the start, we are committed to fund significant projects in the province annually under the scheme,” Disley said.
Sir Julius told the staff and students that the government has undertaken to monitor the exact number of schools and students each year to allow for accurate projections of upcoming students, and we plan to bring all high schools in the province to secondary status.
“We want to make Madina the model girls high school in New Ireland, graduating young women who can excel to high status not only in the province and country but the world.
“New Ireland can produce women of notable status equal to Australian prime minister Ms Julia Gillard, governor-general of Australia Quentin Bryce and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to name a few,” she Julius said.
Sir Julius said New Ireland still leads the country having implemented article 25 and 26 of the United Nations sanctions on Human Rights Charter introducing Free Education and Compulsory Primary Education by 2013 to support the projected Technical school and University of New Ireland so New Irelanders can compete nationally and internationally. 
He also announced that the NIPG would deliver more than K4.4 million projects including new houses for teachers, library and dormitory and major school facilities in the next two to three years for Madina .
This would be done under the Lihir Tax Credit Scheme.
