Give Angau’s nurses fair accommodation

BY now we should see some form of light at the end of the tunnel after Prime Minister Peter O’Neill visited Angau Memorial Hospital in Lae.

This is a big relief  as we can see where we are heading, the eventual rebuilding of a new Angau hospital with other infrastructure to follow.

One major improvement is the construction and completion of accommodation units to house nursing staff.

However, I must raise the question why many nurses still dwell in settlements.

From what I have seen, these nursing quarters are being occupied by a mixture of nurses and other staff such as lab technicians.

This means some of the nursing staff  are travelling home late at night.

Has the risk of being attacked been reduced to an acceptable level for the nurses?

Administrators might have forgotten what happened weeks, months, and years ago by ignoring this issue.

I wonder what criteria is being used to issue these units.

If these quarters are meant for nurses, let it be occupied by nurses alone, including those living in the settlements.

Probably a wider range of issues is behind the distribution of the units.

If there are extra units left after the nurses have been alloted quarters, then let staff from other sections use them.

I appeal to the authorities to look into this matter.

It warrants urgent action  considering the number of applications from nurses for housing.
