Goal blitz in women’s NSL matches

 THE inaugural women’s National Soccer League challenge saw some hefty scores in Port Moresby and Lae on Saturday with the goalmouth bombarded 36 times in eight matches. 

In Port Moresby, Hekari striker Marie Kaipu had a field day scoring four goals, skipper Susan Gurra collected two, Maggie Weva added another double and and Tess Nikirri and Lorna Tauloi, contributed a goal each to their massive 10-1 victory over Bizprints Angels.

The Angels managed to score one through PNG youth striker Poriona Loranz.

In the early game, a star-studded University Inter were too classy for Maxpro Security PNGIPA.

Striker Tokoi Norrie scored four, Delilah Maive collected a double while Cathy Horris, Niath Salaiau, Francesca Madoni and Pamela collected a goal each to end the match with the same scoreline.

PNGIPA scored through  Lydia Barnabas.

In Lae, LFA premiers, Bara routed Wau 12-1 and Lae Central beat PNG Power 4-1.

Despite the high scoring matches, WNSL coordinator Simon Koima was satisfied with the performance of the players.

Koima said he was optimistic there would be much improvement in next weekend’s matches.

He is urging the womenfolk in Port Moresby and Lae to turn up at the games and support their daughters and wives plying their skills in the competition.

However, some callers have suggested that experienced players should spread themselves around the four teams rather than grouping in one team.

They respected the wishes of the players but it would make the challenge competitive if the elite talents of the players were spread around the teams.

Similar sentiments were also expressed in Lae with Bara, who continue to dominate women’s football competition.
