TEACHERS are key people to implement the National Government’s vision in education so their welfare should be treated with care and respect, Jimi MP Wake Goi says.
Goi, who is the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion, made this statement last week after providing a two-week special charter for teachers who were sent to teach at the Jimi Secondary School.
The charter was for Helifix to take the 34 teachers and their families to the school.
With the bad road from Banz to Jimi in Jiwaka, Goi and the Jimi development authority (DDA) paid for the charter so that teachers could be transported.
On Thursday, the first lot of teachers and their families were airlifted to the school at Kol from Mt Hagen.
Apart from that, Goi also paid Central Aviation to fly more than 500 students to the school.
He said the road from Banz to Kol is still under construction and teachers and their families were being airlifted.
“My vision was to make sure the first intake of the grade 11s began the year and I have to support and meet all the cost of running the 2020 academic year,” he said.
Goi said apart from paying for the charters, the DDA also funded for food rations.
“We are still waiting for the road to be fully funded and completed,” he said.
“But while maintenance is going on, we will continue to provide charters for teachers and their families, students and food supplies.”
Goi said he started supporting Jimi Secondary since he was elected in 2017.
School principal Jerome Korki acknowledged Goi for the support.
Jimi is located at one of the most remote areas of Jiwaka and with Goi’s support, he will make sure that they will perform to the best of their abilities, Korki said.
Hevifix Mt Hagen operations manager Martin Turwai confirmed that the two weeks charter started last week.
