A Goilala netball team took part in the Papua New Guinea Junior Netball championships for the first time.
The side, with players mostly sourced from Port Moresby, played as the Central 3 side in the Under-15 division.
Central Netball Association president Iammo Launa and her executives took the initiative to introduce the sport to the Goilala teenagers living at Badihagwa.
“We ran a training session and trials at the Badihagwa High School courts as development for them to experience a sport they hadn’t played before,” Launa said.
“We’re trying them out to get a feel for the game and hopefully get them to embrace, which will be a bonus for netball in the Central.”
Launa, who is a director on the Central provincial government’s sports board, said despite being novices at the sport, the Goilala girls had the physical and athletic ability to excel at the sport.
“For them it’s not about winning but developing and exposing these raw talents to a sport and building interest.
Launa said the team was backed by the Central Netball Association with registration and uniforms to take part in the tournament.
