PNG Institute of Directors president Anthony Yauieb says good governance matters in government.
“We are more involved around corporate governance, but I think the fundamental message is good governance matters, whether it is in the board room, or whether it is in the leaderships among our parliamentarians,” he said.
“Good governance matters and ultimately we should be striving to ensure that what actions and choices we make, it is done for the betterment of our country.”
Yauieb said the institute was a membership organisation formed in 2000 to represent directors and improve standards for directorship.
“We also want to be the leader in the thinking around the space of corporate governance. And so we are looking to particularly improve public corporate governance,” he said.
“Our State-owned enterprises account for a significant share of our economy.
“They provide critical infrastructure in the energy sector, whether it is electricity or water.
“So we very much like to improve corporate governance so that they can be more efficient and ultimately deliver a return to the government and the people.”
One of the institute’s objectives is to establish a higher standard of corporate governance.
