AMERICAN soldiers on a goodwill mission lost their valuables to burglers outside a shopping centre in Wewaktown on Monday, police said.

East Sepik police commander Chief Supt Joseph Poma said the soldiers, members of the ex-Pacific partnership programme,  parked their car in front of the centre.

“They went in for shopping when their car was broken into and their bags stolen,” Poma said.

“The soldiers were in town to provide medical assistance.

“That group was (engaged in the) maintenance of classrooms and school facilities in Wewak.

“It is a shame that people who are here to help us are robbed. This portrays a bad image of our country and people must refrain from such illegal acts.”

Poma said the suspects were known to police and urged them to surrender return the stolen items either to police or the soldiers.
