Gordon nightmare

Letters

SINCE the closure of the Gordon Market in Port Moresby, contractors had to barricade the entire perimeter of the market itself to allow for work on the new market to continue without interruption.
As a result, the bus stop along the perimeter of the Gordon Market was shifted some 30 metres to between Gordon Police Barracks and Jade Island (formerly Tan Trading).
The problems associated with this makeshift bus stop are many.
First is the problem of traffic congestion. It is no longer safe for pedestrians to walk along the sidewalk as PMV drivers will swerve in as if it’s a proper bus stop, thus endangering the lives of pedestrians.
Second, is the influx of commuters.
As far as a proper bus stop infrastructure goes, the one at Gordon fails to cater for the travelling public.
Also, a lot of people take shortcuts to the bus stop by walking into Gordon Police Barracks. It gets crowded, especially in the afternoon when school finishes and people go home after work.
I am sure there are rules in place within the disciplined community of Gordon Police Barracks to ensure the monitoring of anyone who enters the barracks.
But sadly this is not enforced as one can see people simply walking in and out as they please with people loitering in a residential area.
Then there is the noise pollution. Bus crew monotonously shouting “Gerehu-Waigani-Gerehu-Waigani-VC-Gerehu” repeatedly as early as 6am, coupled with engine grunts and honking noises from PMVs waiting to pick up passengers.
Finally, everyone is well aware of the fact that Gordon is the centre of PMV road links to other suburbs in NCD, thus people responsible for planning and developing Moresby North-East should have anticipated these problems well before the closure and renovation of Gordon Market.
I suggest moving the Gerehu-Waigani bus stop to Wards Road as it is convenient for school children and working people and it is a reasonable distance away from residential area.
