Goroka Secondary losing its gloss

Letters

OF the 26 high and secondary schools which have been recognised by the Education Department for putting in a lot of effort to improve their academic performance, Goroka Secondary School is not on the list.
GSS was once one of the top secondary schools in the country and was the pride of the people of Eastern Highlands.
Reflecting back, when I was doing my grade 12 we had five grade 12 classes and all of us made it through universities and colleges. Back then, grade 9 and 11 selections were based on merit.
A few years ago there was a selection system introduced by the so-called landowners.
Basically, a landowner would go around collecting money from students who had failed and he would see to it that they were given a place in either grade 9 or 11.
Someone responsible must explain whether or not the State has the title to the land the school is on because the landowners are using it to bypass the education system.
This is a state institution and its operations must be respected by all.
