Goroka show attracts many

MORE than 110 traditional singsing groups will perform at the National Sports Institute grounds from today as part of the Independence celebration.
Chairman of Eastern Highlands Show Society Gideon Samuel confirmed the registration of 113 singsing groups from all over the Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Island and Southern regions.
He said hosts Eastern Highlands have drawn groups from all the eight districts and they will be complemented by guest groups from other provinces.
The National Gaming Control Board has become the major sponsor.
“The show will begin with an agriculture fair showcasing agricultural potential of Eastern Highlands, with institutes displaying and demonstrating products,” Samuel said.
“Agriculture Minister Tommy Tomscoll will open the three-day show and Eastern Highlands Governor Julie Soso will also be present.”
The famous Unggai-Bena Kangal dance will be one of the highlights. Unggai-Bena MP and Minister for Lands Benny Allan is sponsoring the group.
Correctional Services band members will play the bag-pipe as well.
A fundraising dinner will be held at the Haven Resort outside Goroka town where musicians such as Sharzy, Twin Tribes and K-Dumen will perform live on Friday night.
“Show activities will come alive on Saturday and Sunday and include singsing groups and performances, live performances in the amphitheatre, demonstrations, displays and Bintangor Lahanis will promote rugby league and provide coaching activities.”
Firemen from the Goroka Fire station will also perform drills.
The Bird of Paradise Hotel in Goroka has been booked out by overseas tourists while other lodges and guest houses in town are also heavily booked.
The Goroka Show that coincides with the country’s annual Independence celebrations is included in the Events Calendar and continues to attract international tourists.
