Sports and Tourism Minister Justin Tkatchenko has given approval for the staging of the 2016 Goroka Show at National Sports Institute in Goroka as scheduled.

Tkatchenko confirmed the approval following dialogue with PNG Sports Foundation chief executive officer Peter Tsiamalili Jr, the director of NSI and the show organising committee.

“After consulting with the parties concerned, I have instructed Tsiamalili Jr to issue the appropriate instruments to enable the show to go ahead at NSI,” Tkatchenko said.

“We must grab every opportunity that we can get to show our identity and culture to the world.

“The last thing that we want to do is to suppress our peoples’ opportunity, especially when it comes to our cultures and traditions.

“I thank the Sports Foundation and NSI management team for their response.”

PNG Sports Foundation CEO Tsiamalili Jr confirmed that an agreement was reached with NSI management and all parties were happy for the show to go ahead at NSI.

“The Sports Minister and NSI director are happy for the show to go on,” he said.

Tsiamalili said a section of the field would be fenced off  for use by the Under-20 women’s soccer team in preparation for the World Cup in November.
