PREPARATIONS are underway at the National Sports Institute in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, for next weekend’s Highlands-Mamose Athletics Championships.
Athletics Papua New Guinea and sponsor PNG Air have been working with the institute to stage the open event.
According to the institute, two teams have already indicated their participation with a number of individuals confirming their attendance.
“The invitation to this meet has been extended to all Highlands and Mamose provinces,” the institute said.
“Anyone else who is interested in the event can enquire with organisers.
“This is also a good lead-up competition for provinces that need to identify or make selections for their provincial athletics teams.
“Prior to the championships, the institute will conduct a primary school athletics festival next Thursday.
“This is targeted at Under-14 and U16 student participants in the sprints and middle distance events.
“Registration for both events closes next Monday.”
Meanwhile, the institute said it was ready to host the championships.
“Apart from the numerous calls from individual athletes wanting to participate, two teams have confirmed,” it said.
“Lae’s Asiawe club and the East Sepik Athletics Association have indicated their attendance.
“Our committee is busy organising the grounds while the coaching staff have been preparing the institute’s development athletes.”
The championships will be a lead-up to the end-of-year PNG Air National Athletics Championship to select athletes for the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.
