A BUDGET of K18.9 million has been set aside for the redevelopment of the main market in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, says Governor Peter Numu.
He said K7.5 million has already been paid to contractor China Wuyi PNG Corporation Ltd to start the work this month.
“The market will be large, with space to cater for registered sellers of all farm produce and other products, space for storing fresh produce, an ATM, a BSP deposit area, a clinic and a police station,’’ he said.
Numu told The National during the first payment of funds in Port Moresby on Friday that: “The project is under joint funding from the national government and K10 million from the Eastern Highlands government.
“The State had allocated K12 million in 2013.
Some of that money was used for the design. The provincial government has allocated K10 million to have the project, he said.
The new temporary market is under construction on the fringes of town next to the Asaroufa village and sellers would be moved there during the redevelopment of the main market.
China Wuyi deputy general manager Ding Hong Liang said the project was going to be delivered on time as given on the contract.
