THE Government will focus on four major projects – Wafi-Golpu, P’nyang, Papua LNG and Porgera – by September, Prime Minister James Marape says.
During the signing of allegiance agreements with four more political parties to strengthen the coalition he leads, Marape said the Pangu-led Government planned to deliver the four projects before Sept 16.
“Let me signal to all our investors in agriculture, forestry, mining, oil and gas, and tourism (that) politics displayed by numbers decide, and the number has already shifted into the Pangu-led Government,” he said.
“As a Government, we focus on Wafi-Golpu, P’nyang, Papua LNG and we ask Total and Exxon.
“The number we are securing here dispels speculations that might give insecurity to our investors.”
Marape said stakeholders should be given the confidence that Government has the numbers in Parliament but outside.
“The coalition of parties we have here will be campaigning to form government in 2022,” Marape said. Pangu signed a coalition partnership with the United Labour Party, United Resources Party and National Alliance which has given them 63 MPs. On Friday, Pangu signed up the Social Democratic Party, Our Development Party, Country Party and People’s Party.
“We will always have number above 80 and that’s majority we need to pass some of the laws.”
Social Democratic Party leader Powes Parkop said they were small parties but strong members of the coalition.
Our Development Party official Sir Puka Temu thanked Marape for recognising smaller parties.
Country Party leader Chris Haiveta said they had supported Marape as prime minister and would continue to 2022.
People’s Party leader Dr William Tongap said they were happy to stand with Pangu.

  • This is the Kundu drums that beat everytime when green grass flowrises on the other side of the river! So much so of the so called Yo-Yo people (parties) etc.

  • They are hanging on the fence and following the direction of the wind. when the wind blows to east, west, north and south, they just follow the direction. Shame on them.

  • Here we go again ,i thought we should small and simple why get rich quickly what about renewable resources ???

    • Agree, non-renewable resources (minerals & oil/gas) are a kind of get rich scheme for a state & its citizens. After 6 years of LNG export from PNG & we have not seen the promised benefits, maybe all gone into servicing the state’s share of the project loan & other state’s loans from more borrowings. The country has more than 50 years of mining history since BCL & this non-renewable resource has not transformed the country however it (non-renewable sector) has become a source of conflict in the past, current and will be into the future as they say the answers for our future are often found in our past, i.e. history has a habit of repeating itself. So after more than 50 years of mining/oil/gas exports our indicators (KPI) for the renewable sector since independence has not improved. One of the vital and important component of the KPI for the renewable sector is the people. Our Human Development Index (HDI) on a global scale does not look good compared to a country like Singapore which does not have non-renewable resource like PNG. So let me finish off with this old proverb “If you want 1 year of prosperity then grow gains, if you want 10 years of prosperity then grow trees but if you want 100 years of prosperity then grow people” The proof of this say is in the national of Singapore, a living testimony, it sits in the top 10 of HDI as of 2019 and by the way PNG is 155.

  • I think so…yes PNG must have those kind of Projects going and must take place. Our Economy, Society and Environment sustainability are areas of concern..

  • Definitely what we see is what we are, if we see we are small, that is what we are, believe & think big that
we can not sell our birth rights when the timing is right, lets wake up from our sleep & see the other side of the coin, take this personally, surely will be millionaires…….

    • If you want PNGeans to be millionaires then focus on the renewable sector like agriculture because every PNGeans own a piece of real estate (land in the village) as real estate investors often say if you own real estate you are an instant millionaire. So if the state & other stakeholders continue to invest (i.e. various forms of investment including road Infrastructure to connect demand/supply for business to flow) in making the piece of real estate valuable (i.e. if the land you & I own in the village to produce an economic return & grown every year like property in towns) and if we continue to wisely use our economic returns from the land for further investments then we are on our way to becoming millionaires (tingim not everyone in PNG owns land that has copper/gold/oil/gas so this sector will not make everyone in PNG millionaires. In fact if you read medieval European history & through their feudal system only the monarchs & crowns (i.e. the royal family like in England) own the land and real estate (or land) was aptly called “royal estate” i.e. it is only owned by the royal family so fast forward into the 21st century the state of those European countries now own the land and the millionaire dollar question is who owns the land in PNG?

  • A start of a pendulum is on. PNG politics is a pendulum type come 2 years from now. We’ll see which party holds onto the pendulum after 2022 General Elections.

  • The current government have some very strong and potential inside and coming up with some very smart strategies.
We the citizen have high hopes on your best decisions for our beautiful country.
We look forward to seeing your implementation.

  • What about using one of the LNG reservoirs to generate electricity for the whole of PNG. During APEC US vice president Mike Pence was speaking about it when in reality he was looking at PNGs natural resources and possibility it holds. Just imagine how that would impact the economy and the social livelihood of of PNG.
