Governor’s Cup starts
The National, Friday July 25th, 2014
TWENTY teams from Port Moresby and Motu Koita villages will open up the NCD Governo’rs Cup Nines rugby league challenge at the Kone Tigers Oval today.
Over the next three days, the cream of talent will be on show as they look to impress Team NCD selectors for a chance to participate in the PNG Games in November in Lae.
With a wide selection of talent, including the pacey Balimo outfit, Port Moresby Rugby League heavies, Suburban, Kai Marshalls of Hohola, stylish Koki Eels and the unknown talent from Sogeri, Pari, Hanuabada and Lea Lea, it is set to be a highly competitive weekend.
Tournament chairman Micky Kone said they are expecting tougher competition with the opening for Motu Koita village teams to take part.
“With 20 teams taking part it is going to be a hectic weekend but we are grateful that the NCD sports desk under John Boino has contributed K10,000 towards prize money for those that do well,” Kone said.
Kone said the prize money would be divided for the cup, plate and bowl winners and runners-up.
NCD sports desk manager Billy Aki said he expected to see flair by the village-based teams who will give the city at test.
