WEST Sepik Governor Tony Wouwou has called on Australia to extend the maintenance of the Sepik Highway from Wewak to Karaitem.
He thanked Australia for funding the maintenance of the highway from Wewak to Maprik but wants to see it through to Karaitem, Lumi, in West Sepik.
Wouwou said the highway served the people of East Sepik and West Sepik.
The Australian Government through the transport sector support programme has given about K20 million for the maintenance programme.
“While we acknowledge and appreciate the generous support from the Government and the people of Australia for funding the maintenance of the highway, it is not just from Wewak to Maprik. The Sepik Highway starts from Wewak, in East Sepik, to Karaitem in the Lumi district, of West Sepik. Therefore we ask Australia to also fund the highway maintenance from Wewak to Lumi. We also thank the PNG Government and the Department of Works for aliening the donor partners to support in the development of the road infrastructure in the country under the National Road Strategy of the Government.
“We have contributed immensely to the development of East Sepik for over 30 years. Leaving part of this important economical highway from Maprik to Drekikir then to Nuku and Lumi, in West Sepik, will be doing injustice to my people in West Sepik,” Wouwou said.
He said the road from Maprik to Lumi and Nuku was in a poor condition.
