MILNE Bay Governor Titus Philemon is disappointed with the behaviour of some of the students attending schools overseas, a youth leader says..

He said the provincial government would not sponsor anyone to study overseas and called on the Government to quickly restore PNG’s international credibility and reputation.

He was referring to a media report that some PNG students studying in Cebu, Philippines, had been banned from nightclubs because of their disorderly conduct.

“The Milne Bay provincial government will not sponsor any students to study overseas. It’s a very expensive exercise,” he said.

“They must study here at PNG’s own tertiary institutions. Of course it’s another matter if they win scholarships from accredited colleges and universities overseas.

“The Government is providing free education and most provincial governments and MPs are sponsoring  students to attend our own tertiary institutions.

“The Government is doing all it can to improve the quality of education and we must take pride in our own institutions and play our part as parents and citizens.

“My office has received many requests for scholarships but I don’t have the money to assist everyone.

“It’s expensive. Some of the applicants are very young and some of them do not even qualify for studies abroad.”

He said the Government has made education its number one priority and it was everyone’s responsibility to benefit from that.
