Governor-General: Agriculture important for livelihood
The National, Monday March 31st, 2014
THE importance of agriculture the country was emphasised by the Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio to University of Natural Resources and Environment students in Gazelle, East New Britain.
Speaking at the university’s graduation last Friday, Sir Michael said agriculture was the only sector that could sustain people for a very long time. “Young people need to realise this and take the agriculture sector seriously,” he said.
He told more than 180 graduating students that there were three main priorities for all nations: Food security, health and national security.
He said PNG was moving fast into the modern era which called for young people to be more responsible.
“Young people lack discipline these days, it is important for you to see how crucial it is for PNG to have good leaders in the future, and be responsible now with your career,” Sir Michael said.
“Find your correct place in the society you live in and serve your purpose well,” he said.
Addressing the graduation, UNRE’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Siaguru urged the students to be guided by honesty, integrity and respect.
He supported Sir Michael’s call for students and young professionals to be more responsible while in their youth. “This nation is blessed, however discipline and great leadership are lacking. There is a wave of “don’t care” attitude destroying the foundations of this nation,” he said.
Siaguru told the students to empower their communities and networking circles to participate in agricultural activities as a way of sustaining their livelihood.
“Continue to shout until you are heard.”
