MORE than K11 million in infrastructure development funds have been distributed to 44 schools, including those in rural areas, in Morobe, says Governor Ginson Saonu.
Saonu presented cheques to principals and school representatives of high schools, secondary schools and technical and vocational education and training (Tvet) institutes when launching the 2021 school infrastructure development project in Lae.
He said student intakes had increased while education infrastructures across the country were collapsing.
This initiative was part of Saonu’s five-year development plan to balance out quality education in the province.
“Government tuition fund is not enough so the Morobe government has seen this and has implemented where there is need,” he said.
“This means that parents will not have to pay project fees, but school fees as decided by the provincial education board.”
Chairman of the provincial high, secondary and Tvet infrastructure subsidy grants, Robin Bazinuc, said all grant recipients signed a memorandum of agreement with the provincial government and must honour it to use the money for the intended purpose.
He said a monitoring team would be on the look-out.
“There should be no variation or re-scoping,” he said.
“All declared projects should start now and be delivered by the end next May.”
Bazinuc said copies of the agreement would be given to district administrators to help monitor the projects. He said a total of K12,275 had been allocated for the programme.
