NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan says there will be a delay in payments of pensions for the elderly and disabled in the province this month.
Sir Julius said “normal operations of Government are suspended under the state of emergency and my commitment to the pensioners to pay them by April 30, is not going to happen”.
“It is important that we all understand the cause for the delay since we are all caught up in the global coronavirus pandemic and we have taken this health issue very seriously,” he said.
“We will make good on the payments when we get over the state of emergency.”
Pensioners in the Murat and Tikana LLGs received their 2020 annual pensions at the new rate of K500 each.
“We started paying the new rate of K500 per person which is an increase from the old rate of K360 per year,” Sir Julius said.
“We will also pay pensioners in Namatanai, in line with the resolution of the council of elders conference in Tabar last year.”
