THE Government is working with the governors to determine how the local level government elections will be conducted, says Minister for Inter-Governmental Relations Kevin Isifu.
“We will get the views of how the governors want to conduct the elections and then we will prepare submissions for the National Executive Council,” he said.
“We have deliberated on this issue and there is a National Executive Council decision in place.”
He said the Government had already approved the plan to do away with the direct elections – people voting for the respective presidents and councilors voting for the president.
“So this decision is still there. As soon as the necessary legislation that will make this decision effective, then I will issue a statement to tell the people of the Government’s decision.”
He said the governors had their own interests.
“Some of them had written to me asking if they can conduct elections differently with people electing the presidents,” he said.
Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas wanted to know if the first-past-the-post or the limited preference voting systems would be used in the LLG elections in June.
