PRIME Minister James Marape says the Government has allocated K3 million as relief assistance to Pacific island countries hit by CyCyclone Tino last week.
The cyclone hit Tuvalu and Fiji’s second largest island of Vanua Levu last week, damaging properties and leaving some families homeless.
“My Government stands firm to assist in this disaster caused by tropical Cyclone Tino and we are ready to commit K3 million as relief assistance,” Marape said in a statement.
“It is an unfortunate situation for our friends in Tuvalu and Fiji. Therefore, PNG as their closest neighbour in the region is ready to assist.”
Marape said Cyclone Tino had caused huge waves which damaged properties and seawalls along the coast of the two countries.
“Cyclone Tino is heading towards Tonga leaving behind a trail of damage that may take a while to rebuild.
“On behalf of my Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I express our sympathies to those who have lost their homes, properties and possibly lives in this natural disaster.”
