THE Government will continue talks with Chinese businessman Chen Mailin in the hope he will solicit support for the country’s plan to engage in carbon trade with China, an official says.
Chen was one of the four men who arrived on a private jet in Port Moresby on Monday morning, raising questions over the purpose of their visit and why they were not quarantined like all others arriving in the country.
Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Wera Mori said China was one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas.
“We need a Chinese entrepreneur contact for possible engagements in carbon trade,” Mori told The National yesterday.
“PNG needs investments, especially direct foreign investment and not burden the country with very expensive loans.”
He said Chen was a businessman who was welcome to invest in PNG in accordance with its laws.
He said Chen would now be appointed as a climate change advocate.
“He will solicit support for us in our endeavour to address global warming and climate change,” Mori said.
Director of Political Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Port Moresby Sun Jia could not provide any information on Chen.
“The visit was not arranged by the embassy,” he said.
“Please check with the PNG government.” According to a South China Morning Post article published last December, Chen had made his fortune in China through hotels and real estate development.
His business interests also include pharmaceuticals and garment manufacturing.

  • How important is it to do business in carbon trade right now compared to the COVID-19 pandemic and what is needed to prevent it from getting to our country and infecting people.

All laws relating to entry into the country and some specific requirements in the Pandemic Act were breached just to allow this non-significant business deal to happen??

Someone’s not thinking straight in the brain – James Marape, David Manning!! And for goodness sake, the tree planter advocate in Wera Mori…PNG is covered with trees and we don’t really need to plant trees Mori should be asking the Chinese to cut down on the level of carbon emissions into the atmosphere or otherwise send Wera Mori to take up a role in planting trees in some of the deserts in the middle east – he’d really add value there!!

Is this business deal important over the current COVID-19 – which is urgent and of significant priority!! some idiots cant put to use their brains to think critically and make sound and prudent decisions based on the situation on the ground in-country.

  • IS MONEY IMPORTANT OR LIFE???????????????????????
WHY DID THE CHINESE NATIONALS NOT FOLLOWING PNG’S COVID-19 PROTOCOL???????
PNG – ARE WE SERIOUS ABOUT COVID-19????
    AUTHORITIES PLEASE EXPLAIN…………..

  • Why na yumi PNG savi bow down lo ol white man? Now PNG look stupid taim Covid-19 SOE stap na governman kisim China man kam. PNG yumi gat het problem.

  • And Wera and the Chinese guy are shaking hands?? Thats not what you have been telling people to do in your covid – 19 law Mr minister. The advertisements on radio, TV and media are useless meaningless with the minister.

  • Gross misconduct and breach of all established processes and protocols pertaining to COVID 19, namely;
    1. Ban on international flights
    2. 14 days quarantine
    3. Social distancing
    4. Avoid shaking hands
What on this bloody planet was Marape, Manning, Dakulala and this tree planting minister as their basis to breach all COVID 19 protocols just to sign a climate change deal????? whats the urgency????? whats the link between climate change and COVID19?????

  • WAKE-UP PNG, LIFE OR MONEY? Very easy to fool our leaders and kill all of us.
WHY na ol no go lo quarintine processs, are they valuable more than our lives?
We are tax payer, lukautim mipla na bai yupla kisim 1000 lo forthnight na mipla bai struggle bihanim rot raun. LUNATICS!

  • PNG will bow down to China and even lick the corona virus infected ass of a Chinese for cash. Shame on this Government. While everybody else is being told to follow Covid19 guidelines and protocols, you have secretly rolled out the red carpet for some Chinese backdoor dealers to sneak in and make business.
PNG doesn’t seem to learn from dealing with Chinese people. They always have ulterior motives when they come to ‘invest’ in a country. They are never ‘private’ business men, but always in some ways are connected to their government. And they never give free handouts. There is always a string attached to every single signature.
It”s so sad that Marape and co still look the do deals with a nation that doesn’t like transparency, that doesn’t respect human rights, and that has no conscience when it comes to doing business.

  • Wera Mori is jumping into conclusions. He should be talking about the C19 pandemic then the carbon trade as thats the purpose of the chineese’ unlawful entry??…………..What does carbon trade bring in to fight C19 pandemic?

  • Be very careful PNG

  • Wera Mori you are one of these idol leaders sitting in this house man with improper mind set and even doesn’t understand what we are talking about.Don’t rush, let everything come back to normal and we go for it.

  • We must aware PNG that, it would not take too long just soon or later to become puppet for the Chinese government, we have a good start on the unlawful entry of Chinese in to PNG and making decision instead our selves, how can we live by conditions in our own land. Come on PNG… can we think along that line…….does carbon trade is an individual issue that you Mr. minister tolerating. As a citizen for PNG I personally disagrees with these unlawfulness act.
