Govt gives K500,000 to rebuild police station

WORK to rebuild a police station burnt down three years ago will begin soon after K500,000 funding from the Government.
A man detained at the Mutzing police station in the Markham district of Morobe died when it was burnt down in 2016.
Police have not made any arrest.
Officers based there also monitor the flow of traffic along the Highlands Highway.
The cost of rebuilding it is K1.2 million and National Planning and Monitoring Minister Richard Maru gave K500,000 last Friday to help Markham MP Koni Iguan meet the cost.
Maru said the station was an important asset not only to the Markham people but also to others who used the highway.
“There have been numerous accidents along the highway and many lives have been lost due to lack of traffic control by the police,” he said.
“So I hope when the police station is up again, police officers will conduct regular traffic control and roadblocks to save lives.”
Iguan said the police station would also assist police in the monitoring of drugs and gun smuggling.
“Law and order is also an issue in the district. I am prioritising the police station which will be built along with the Level Four hospital funded by the Government,”he said.
The Markham District Development Authority will allocate K700,000 for the project that is expected to be completed in June.
