GOVERNMENT must engage civil society in creating opportunities for all citizens in order to reduce income inequality, says chairman of Apec CEO Summit 2018 Isikeli Taureka.
He said this during closing of the summit on board the cruise liner Pacific Explorer in Port Moresby last Saturday.
The theme of the summit was ‘Inclusion in the Age of Disruption, Chatting a Common Future’.
“The challenge of creating inclusive opportunities are an essential component for all members of Apec economies,” Taureka said.
“PNG relies on international trade rules the WTO (World Trade Organisation) must continue if economies are to benefit from a rural-based system.”
Taureka said investing in infrastructure to provide affordable reliable access to Wi-Fi and broadband was vital to drive the growth of micro small and medium enterprises and to realise the goal of an inclusive society.
“Panelists noted that despite trade tension, there is optimism that trade in the region will grow in the next 12 months, but confidence level of business, say in China and Mexico, are falling sharply,” he said.
“The single most-important challenge is concerned about growth and protectionism and the role of WTO.”
