I WRITE  to comment on the increase in building fires especially shops in the cities of Lae and Port Moresby in the in recent time.

From my observations, nearly most fires are caused by high voltage electrical faults.

This is because unlike in the past where bakeries were separate businesses with standalone buildings, today we see a new trend where nearly all super markets build their own in- house bakeries.

This has necessitated a high risk to shop building fires. The Government and the respective authorities like the National Capital District Commission, building board and PNG Power need to look into this practice in view of the recent fire at the Waigani Central shopping mall.

The building board must have a policy in place that all in-house bakeries must be abolished in preference of standalone buildings.
