Govt plans maintenance work at Hiritano Highway
THE Government will carry out maintenance work along the Hiritano Highway between 9-Mile in the National Capital District and Wapanapi Bridge in Central when funds are available, Works Minister Michael Nali says.
Nali said it was not possible to do complete maintenance, including resealing of sections from 9-Mile to Kuripa, and from Bereina to Wapanapi Bridge on the border of
Central and Gulf provinces, without money.
He said the department was aware of the serious need to carry out maintenance on sections of the highway but funding constraints would not allow that.
However he said the department would certainly carry out minor maintenance when some funds were available to give comfort to the commuters.
“As soon as we get some road maintenance funds, we’ll fix it by doing minor maintenance like filing potholes and upgrading the poor sections of the highway,”he said.
The minister said the Hiritano and Magi Highways were important national roads that would come under two donor funding programmes but he could not say when.
