Govt proposes retirement policy

PRIME Minister James Marape wants policemen and officers nationwide to prevent nepotism, political support and bribery from tarnishing the Constabulary as the Government proposes to launch a “golden handshake” policy for their retirement.
Police Minister William Onglo confirmed that he would be taking up the “golden handshake initiative” to the next sitting of the National Executive Council (NEC) to ensure it is implemented in the next 12 months.
The “golden handshake” is to ensure officers who have given 20 to 30 years of their lives to the service can be retrenched or retired with a significant package that may include a land and house, monetary or Small Medium Enterprise (SME) package.
Speaking at the closing of the police prosecution and crimes conference on Friday, Marape said the initiative would benefit policemen and officers with unblemished service records.
“The Government is supportive of the administration led by Police Commissioner David Manning to recognise the service of those who served the constabulary without any blemishes to their name,” he said.
“We want to reward hard working policemen and women who worked till the end serving their country diligently.
“When you retire, there is a golden handshake to look forward to.
“It might not be cash but I would like to ensure there are land and housing, or a retired officer to be part of the SME programmes.
“So, after serving 20 to 30 years, there is a link for you in SME to provide security after retirement,” he said, adding that “we can work with your police savings and loans”.

    • Maybe the government should do like wise to public servants who have diligently served under governments for more than 25 to 40 years with a golden handshake by way of paying gratuity and or Ex Gratia payments regardless whether contracted or contracted..

The government should show its gratitude to long serving public servants by doing just that…

PS that have served longer that 30 to 40 years have lived well over half of their life time serving different governments and should be sent off with some appreciation.

      Thankyou

    • Just remove the tax burden on all public servants income and encourage savings with respective Savings and Loans Institutions. This will encourage more meaningful and effective engagement by all public servants regardless of whether they are police personnel or ordinary employees of the State

  • Mining industries throughout the country are the most highest tax payer of 42% of their hard earned salaries. Is the current government looking at stabilizing the current tax regime?
The public servants out there are surely looking forward to have these proposed retirement benefits and for us private enterprises nothing, Is the government looking to stabilize the taxs being paid by the hard working Miners?

  • Would this apply in the cases whereby an officer is permanently disabled or loss of life while in the line of duty prior to reaching the min 20 years of service?

Also, how about our PNGDF Officers. Will they be considered for Golden Handshake?

  • Golden handshake with Cash, land or house. better ..
I Say NO to SME or Police saving related policy .. Corruption and misuse is likely in these areas..

  • Thank you National newspaper for reporting this news. My father is a police prosecutor serving the constabulary for 47 years. It’s a big ask of tax payers money by the Prime Minister ‘Golden Hand Shake ‘ initiative. Looking forward to the parliament decision on this initiative.

  • Submissions are done by Minister and Secretary responsible for each department to go before the NEC,esp those Departments who are that Smart.

  • And also do the same to the hard working national tax payers in mining industries in the country as well..

  • We are taking about public service but how about Education sector will the government to the same as the other public servants because the education sector especially the teachers they are our backbones of the nation so the government should do something good for them when they are retrenched.

  • Is Police Department the only government department that implements the government policies? Is it that they are the only tax payers?
There are other government departments as well who are tirelessly, sacrificing their life to ensure government policies are implemented and also paying for taxes through their salaries.
Do the same for the entire public service departments.
I totally don’t agree with these. What are disgraceful agenda and a mockery?

  • Other public servants also served the people of PNG, why can’t they be included in the ‘ golden handshake’

  • Just think about the TEACHERS. Without them there won’t be any life. They are the source of every so called people. They do their work sleeplessly, restlessly, even their weekends they keep on work.
Please Rt. Hon. Prime Minister why not you also consider the hardworking chalk-dusters with the same Handshake Package too.
    Thank you!
