THE national government and the education department should look at establishing a technical teacher training centre to train specialised technical teachers.

Kuli Tvet manager Steward Lupian said this is because most teachers have the skills but they do not have the knowledge to lecture in a class.

He said this is forcing the centres to waste funds on sending their teachers to attend training in order to be qualified to teach.

“Technical education is the foundation of nation building and it would more appropriate when the government find means and ways to establish a training center for Tvet teachers.

“I have recruited 12 teachers but then the centre has to waste more money in order to send the teachers to attend further training before lecturing,” he said.

He said with the national government free education policy classrooms are overcrowded and they have to more teachers so that the number of students can be divided.

Lupian commended Jiwaka Governor Dr William Tongamp for focusing on improving the standard of TVET in the province.

He said Jiwaka has four centers and they are Minj, Fatima, Maria Kwin and Kuli and they will need more assistance to have qualified teachers who can produce more people with the technical knowledge.

“I’m using the centres money now to send my teachers to get further trainings before teaching. This is because there is no training currently in placewhereteachers can attend to,” Lupian said.

Kuli TVET is a boarding centre with over 300 students and to maintain the standard of the school it needs to have qualified teachers.

“Why I’m stressing more on this education is because PNG will need its own people to develop the country and the resources instead of hiring the expatriate to work and earn what our own brothers and sisters can.”

He said skills training are very important for a young nation like PNG and urged the government to focus on it by providing a training centre.
