Govt yet to take up proposed Lutheran uni

 THE Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology is yet to discuss with the Lutheran church the proposed Lutheran University of PNG, Parliament has been told. 

Deputy Opposition leader Sam Basil questioned Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Minister Malakai Tabar in Parliament on the progress of the university. Tabar said he had been aware of the issue from 2008. “When I entered office last year, I asked about the issue but I’m yet to be given a full briefing on the proposed Lutheran University of PNG,” he said. 

“I still have to sit down with the leaders of the church and the council of that university. XxxAs soon as I get some more details, especially from the council or the leadership of the church, I will inform parliament of the progress of that institution.”

Tabar assured Basil that he would make available a progressive report to parliament.

In 2006, Parliament passed a Lutheran University of PNG Act for the church to fund and operate a university.

But this was repealed by a Lutheran University of PNG Act in 2012. 

In the last session, Parliament passed a new legislation to repeal the 2012 Act and bring back the 2006 Act.
