Graduates urged to know variety of products

UPCOMING civil engineers in the country should graduate already knowing the right type of products to use to better PNG lives, a graduate engineer says.
Markham Culverts Ltd’s Frederick Simongi said this when referring to the relationship the company has had over the years with Polytechnic Institute of PNG and University of Technology.
He said part of the company’s core values was community development and it had been involved with the two institutions over the years in teaching and training students in the usage of their products with the latest methods and technologies.
Simongi said the most recent partnership was sponsoring Polytech’s final year civil engineering diploma students’ gabion retaining wall design project between August and November.
The project was for the Bumbu river gabion retaining wall, where students were required to use the company’s products with realistic site conditions to design the gabion wall, provided by Markham Culverts.
Simongi said they assessed the student’s designs according to the criteria and three groups were awarded in cash on Nov 27.
All final year civil engineering students who took part were awarded certificates of participation.
“We are proud to be the major sponsor of this project and we hope to see this continue with Polytechnic in the coming years,” Simongi said. “We aim to help civil engineers build a better PNG, therefore, we believe teaching and training young civil engineers on the usage of the right products in the projects.”
