NEW Caledonia mermaid Lara Grageon  smashed the women’s 400m freestyle in 4.20.40, beating the time she set in the preliminary heats.

She has been in outstanding form during the three days of swimming.

Her new swim record is one of the four registered yesterday in Day Three of the competition.

The other record-holders include Emma Terebo from New Caledonia who clocked 1.02.60 to break the 1.03.50 she set earlier yesterday.

Terebo said she was happy and it was her personal best time in this event.

“Now it is confirmed as Games record, I have very happy.

“ I am looking for more challenges in the remaining days of competition,” she said.

The other record was in the men’s 50m breast stroke by Amini Fonua of Tonga in a time of 28.20 beating the record set by Stephane Debaere (28.29).

The 19-year-old set a new record in 3.56.82 breaking the record held by Oliver Saminadin (4:04.72) during the 2007 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa. Papua New Guinea Swimming Incorporated president Elizabeth Wells said she was very happy with the competition put up by PNG swimmers and visiting athletes.

Well said as of yesterday, 22 Games records had fallen at the BSP Arena Aquatic Centre, and many more were likely to fall in the remaining four days.

The swimming competition will end with an “Open Swim” at Loloata on Sunday morning.
