Grandpa on trial for alleged rape

A MAN was committed to stand trial in the National Court for allegedly raping his four-year-old granddaughter in Port Moresby about a year ago.
Waigani committal court magistrate Billy Pidu said the evidence before the court was sufficient to commit the grandfather from Ihu’s Paivera village in Gulf to stand trial in the National Court.
He said the use of any object to sexually penetrate a girl or woman was regarded as rape.
“I also took into consideration that offences involving minors in such case will not be able to be brought into court to give their story,” he added.
Pidu made the ruling after considering submissions from the defence lawyer from the office of the public solicitor and the police prosecutor.
The grandfather is alleged to have between 5pm and 6am on Sept 24, 2020, in Badili’s Talai settlement used his fingers to penetrate his granddaughter.
His wife was sleeping when she was awakened by the girl’s cries and went to the room to check.
She then asked her granddaughter why she was crying but she did not say anything.
Two days later, the girl was bleeding heavily and was taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital.
In the hospital, the girl told her elder sister that she was raped by her grandfather and that he had sexually attacked her several times.
Pidu fixed Feb 2 for the grandfather’s section 96 statement.
