Grant Papua independence

MANY people will view the prime minister’s statement on Papua during the Indonesian president’s visit with some reservations. Sceptics will no doubt say that PNG has once again faltered at a crucial high but right moment of opportunity to state its support for the Papuan cause; that is to start a dialogue with the Republic of Indonesia on the pathway for Papua, which will lead to self-determination and full independence. It is understandably sensitive for PNG to upset Indonesia on such an important occasion, but let us face it, Papua must now be allowed to assume full membership of the Melanesia Spearhead Group. Indonesia will do herself a favour by granting self-determination to Papua. Otherwise, all the talk about peace will fail and further disturbances will continue.
