A GROUP in Lae yesterday started the “Morobe support for Australia bushfire appeal” to assist the people of Australia affected by the bushfires.
The appeal will run for six weeks with “appeal boxes” located throughout the city for people to contribute any cash they can give.
The target is K500,000, according to treasurer for the group Jane Kenni.
She said the Bank South Pacific account number for the appeal is 7018880968 under the account name “Morobe Support for Australia Bushfire Appeal”.
“If you got any donations, you can make a direct deposit through internet banking, mobile transfer or write a cheque to the account stated.
“We’re looking at putting the appeal boxes in various shops.”
She said there would be other fundraising activities in coming weeks including youths doing a wheelbarrow push at schedule times at Eriku, town and main market.
Women from the Lae Safe City will also be involved.
“They will be wearing tags.
“So when you see guys and women in tags they must be genuine before collections can be made,” Kenni said.
Lae MP John Rosso gave K5,000 and urged others to contribute to a worthy cause.
He said Lae residents had benefitted from Australian taxpayers through the new Angau Hospital costing nearly K500 million and the Australian Federal Police partnership programme.
He asked them to reciprocate the help.
