A community-based group in the Laiagam-Porgera, Enga, is trying to revive some of its lost cultures.
The Lagaip Sangai Festival was launched last Thursday at Wanepap Catholic church.
Festival chairman Tony Sulupin said the Lagaip community wanted to revive Enga’s long-gone ritual tradition (sangai).
Sulupin said that the committee was focused on involving children and students in the ritual ceremony to promote, preserve and enjoy their culture and tradition.
“We want to make sure that they value their culture and pass it on to future generations,” he said.
Sulupin said the festival would be included in the national events calendar of the National Cultural Commission and would be held every July.
He said that it was sad that many young men and women from Lagaip didn’t know about their own culture.
“This time we want to make sure that little ones back in the village or in schools practice and preserve their culture,” he said.
