AFTER two unsuccessful attempts, the Central Yabim Women’s Association in Morobe has finally set up a piggery project to help its members sustain livelihoods, president Mina Somu says.
The association is affiliated to the Finschhafen Women’s Foundation and previously went by the name Amuni Foundation.
Amuni in the Burum dialect means ‘mother’ and the association was established with 18 mothers.
The association covers the villages of Bugaem, Ngasingaclatu, Sokaneng and Gawenglabu.
“The first site we started the project had a dispute so we went onto the next site and as the building was about to be complete, we had to dismantle it because of another dispute,” Somu said.
“The area the building is now on was given in good faith for the association to venture into the piggery project.”
She said the project took the association almost two years to complete (November 2020 to April 2022).
National Agriculture and Livestock acting director for Northern region Norbert Nou A’O said piggery was a good project as there was a demand for pigs in the district.
