Groups to protest
The National, Monday 23rd April 2012
THE PNG Trade Union Congress and its coalition partners plan to stage a peaceful protest at Parliament House tomorrow.
The trade unions, non-government organisations, students from the University of Papua New Guinea and others decided on the action after failing to receive a response from the government on the petition they gave Prime Minister Peter O’Neill in Port Moresby on April 10.
Before giving the petition, the groups had staged a protest march before gathering at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
They want all unconstitutional legislations it recently passed repealed.
The legislations are the Judicial Conduct Act 2012 and the Supreme Court Amendment Act 2012.
The organisers of tomorrow’s demonstration have not revealed details of their plan.
But congress vice-president Alex Rawali confirmed last night that there would be a peaceful demonstration tomorrow when parliament would be in session.
PNGTUC secretary general John Paska last Wednesday had urged parliamentarians not to vote for Judicial Amendment Act 2012.
