LEADERS from two ethnic groups involved in a clash at Morata settlement, Port Moresby, have vowed to stop fighting.
The leaders from Tari, Southern Highlands, and Eastern Highlands provinces met at the Waigani police station on Tuesday and told police station commander Insp Tony Kavan and other senior officers they wished to bury the hatchet and move on.
Reports said the fight started when a mediation ceremony turned nasty.
National Capital District police chief Andy Bawa said the fight was the result of a drunken brawl in which a man from Eastern Highlands province was injured.
“A few people got injured in the fight,” Bawa said.
Police reports said a number of houses belonging to the Taris were damaged by Eastern Highlanders.
Bawa said police would investigate the matter and thanked the leaders for agreeing to make peace.
But people in the suburb said the situation was still tense and the community at Morata 1 was living in fear of surprise attacks from members of the factions.
