THE Kavieng district court in New Ireland has sentenced a security guard to 12 months in jail for illegally possessing live ammunition.
Erson Orey was arrested by the Operation Paia Lait team, the Christmas and New Year Operation in New Ireland, which began on Dec 1.
Acting provincial police commander Oena Afeke said Operation Paia Lait was tipped off that the guard had live ammunition in his possession.
He was found in possession of 28 5.56mm live rounds.
Afeke said Orey of Lorengau, Manus, was working as a security guard with Luro Security in New Ireland when he was arrested.
Afeke said Orey’s arrest was a result of the establishment of the pre-Christmas and New Year operation by police.
He thanked the team for a job well done.
“The response from the operation is really good so far and I commend operation Paia Lait for performing effectively since last Thursday,” Afeke said.
