Guide attitude with regulations

Letters

I FIND it traumatising enough to know that we have failed to avoid this fatal breach by death itself on our socio-security and sovereignty, which ignorance is blamed.
I seek not to discuss the underlying impact as this in itself, had obviously shared bright lights on our negligence towards our sovereign borders.
To imagine what would have transpired if it had spread in our midst undetected is sickening.
Around us, nations collapsed and their money and first class health care programmes could do nothing but research.
Breaking news, unspeakable footages, images and stories rule our news feeds as mankind turns to the world of science, for hope against this deadly pandemic – or should I say a mysterious micro-biological attack on human existence.
We all came to a standstill in the last few weeks as our Government developed and implemented strict measures in our preparedness to counter or contain this Covid-19 if and when it steps in again into our boundaries.
We were all again reminded of the forever neglected house rules of hygiene and forced to leave without many things that were closely attached to us and our daily lives.
I sit here thinking about the way we share our betel nut, tobacco, food and drinks and the love and security that we enjoy of being close together.
You see, our society is founded upon these strong ethos and values where living together, loving each other, sharing and caring is our pasin (way of life).
Strong handshakes and bear hugs forms the bond of care and close friendship towards each other. Even death do brings us together. Yes it is us. It is our attitude.
It feels uncomfortable and strange these days when we are not able to do it anymore to people we love, admire and appreciate.
For the first time, our way of life that built the very fabric of our beautiful young society and binds us together as one nation and one people is being forbidden, threatened by this unknown foreign element.
Above all, we will never be able to bury our own mothers, wives, kids and our fathers if we continue to say yes it’s us and it is our attitude.
When the world’s scientists and medical researchers are working to find a cure, our herbs doctors are already promoting their new product, brewed from jungle leaves and filled in an empty coke plastic that can cure Aids and Covid-19.
Yes this is us.
When the house rules of simple hygiene were set down, seven-bomb continued beside the lamb flaps market somewhere in a settlement.
When told to stay at home, we are still crossing Brown River, hiding from police with our betel nut bags.
When we were told to stay away from church but pray, we are preaching one world order down at Tabari place while a pastor asked for tithes to be transferred via phone banking.
Yes, that is us and it is our attitude.
I do find us fascinating but this is no longer funny. This is not a drill. It is real.
When we are told to help monitor and report on any rise in prices of goods during these trying times, we talk about the sky rocketing price of betel nut.
When the Government uses Facebook to deliver its messages, we spend hours creating and laughing at those spineless meme pages and TikTok characters.
Yes it is us.
Facebook itself had found warmth in the eyes of this killer pandemic and has emerged to be the only fastest mode of disseminating information across our society, even across the world, which we all have been following closely.
The Government in the light of our preparedness has given us the privileges where we hear direct from the horse’s mouth and to respond and be heard.
Not mentioning the bulk of information, spilling over the newsfeeds.
A very dangerous door of information is left open that can inflict uncertainty in our understanding to differentiate, inform, educate and caution in our approach to curtail opportunities for Covid-19 to re-enter our personal space.
The media is an important information mechanism that digest and feed the society with the truth and not be swayed nor influenced by this influx of information to distort accuracy of information.
Death is staring us in the face and it is a national security issue. A matter of life and death.
Maybe tell us if we are hit hard, what would be our response when everyone we love start falling by numbers around us, leaving behind corpse that we could never be allowed to bury.
Tell us what you would be saying on those press conference during that very moment and tell us how we would respond.
This is us and it is our attitude.
